When is Valentine's Day?

Celebrate Valentine’s Day 2009 on February 14, Saturday

A festival acknowledging the day of the lovers worldwide is what is popularly known as the Valentine's Day which celebrates the romantic festival with full gaiety & fervor. The festival originated years ago, though, its of late that a vibrant connotation is associated with the festivity. Celebrated religiously every year on the 14th of February chosen worldwide as the day to reckon with lovers, it pays homage to St. Valentinus, the patron saint of love and lovers who was martyred on February 14 about 270 AD.

History
The entire globe seems to be painted red on this beautiful day which actually owes its origin to the Romans in pagan times, which celebrated Feast of Lupercalia in mid-February. As per the legend goes, the actual Valentine celebration started a day before the Feast of Lupercalia, i.e. on 15th February, to observe a holiday to honor Juno - the Queen of Roman Gods and Goddesses, also considered as the Goddess of Women and Marriage. The day was later shifted to 14th February, thus, putting an end to the pagan celebrations.

Many scholars also believe that February 14 was chosen for the celebration of romantic festival of Valentine's Day because of the popular belief in England and France during Middle Ages that February 14 marked the beginning of birds mating season.

Traditions
Love is in the air whenever Valentine's Day is round the corner. Enthusiasm engulf lovers with euphoria, optimism & energy manifolding the merriment of the occasion. Expression of love is greatly achieved through the exchange of love gifts. Love souvenirs of varied form such as refreshing flowers, confectioneries, mementos to something even like love notes are gifted & lovers indulge in making the day beautiful. Initiated by the Duke of Orleans, Charles, this tradition of sending love notes became quiet popular when in 1415 he sent the first known Valentine Day card to his wife from prison.

Keeping the essence of Valentine's Day alive, lovers go out on dates which has been the maintained till date, thus, remaining the most popular culture one would really like to cherish. The day is made memorable with candle light dinners or long drives to name a few.
